The day of today
Madrid 2026Last night V. came for her usual heatwave sleepover. We chatted at night as I was giving instructions to Claude for a feature release we’re demo-ing today. It was evident neither her nor myself was enjoying the partial attention, much like someone who is chatting via whatsapp and also with you IRL, the divided attention can be read as disinterest. I think we should give full attention with whatever we are doing, especially in conversation with other human beings, dividing it is doing a disservice to your relations.
V. pregnancy is going very smooth. She’s very enthusiastic according to her standards (which outwardly isn’t so evident, as is natural in her personality) but is manifested in other ways: how the conversation always comes back to something related to pregnancy, preparations or babies. I’m a bit mesmerized by her conscientiousness without neuroticism, she does everything she’s supposed to do without making a drama about it.
I really feel at a loss describing my days lately, when this happens it’s usually because I’m doing the same things over and over. I would like to inject more variety in my life, especially in the form of trips or walks. However, when I come back to what I’ve written, I appreciate days being described, what seems trivial or routine today is tomorrow’s thrill. I shall describe my day up to this very minute:
I woke up at 6am and immedately sat at the desk to resume instructions for Claude, as Claude was working I silently made coffee (V. was sleeping in the room next door). I came back to give more instructions (which are surprisingly difficult to formulate) and the coffee almost burned. Then I rolled a cigarette and went downstairs to smoke. It was 7am and young people were still making their way back home stumbling after a night out.
I went upstairs to find V. still asleep. She said she would wake up at 7 and wake me up, but by the looks of it, it would be the other way around. I showered and dressed, and then poked my head into V.’s door, which was open. She was laying down dressed and uncovered, as if she was napping, and was breathing heavily. I looked at her for like five seconds before she open her eyes startled and I laughed saying she had extrasensorial capacity for knowing when she was observed. We then had breakfast together and I left for work earlier than usual, as I didn’t want to repeat the half-attention situation I described before by working from home. V. is on vacation so she remained at my house to leave at leisure.
I biked to work. Nothing relevant happened, except perhaps that I saw a guy riding a foldable bike. We were going about the same speed but he was expending much more effort (the city bikes are electric) and somehow I envied him and I wanted a purely mechanical bike. Then I thought “does it hurt not to have it?” which is a really effective question to gauge how much I really need something. and the answer was no, I would probably even resent having to store and chain it when the bike stations are so convenient, so I waved my envy away.
Nobody was at the office when I arrived, and usually I’d take longer to settle in but I immediately set up my two laptops and two monitors, gave instructions to each computer, and then prepared myself a coffee. Then a frenzy of work, then a lunchtime demo where my boss was to present the work where we collaborated, then afterlunch chat with the guys regarding AI.
Then I came back to my desk to finish my entry. If I am to break my own monotony, I ought to do something different coming out of work so I have something fun to describe tomorrow. Let’s see!
